We have been vacationing as a family in Long Beach Island, NJ for the last 3 years. It’s become a place that we both love because we get to enjoy spending time with each other without the dogs, work or life getting in the way. Each year, we get up early to watch the sunrise or sneak out at night to watch the sunset over the ocean. The sound of the waves crashing on the shore will always be a favorite. This year was a special year for many reasons- Primarily because no one got sick and there was no major hiccups in our plans. We went to the beach our first afternoon on LBI to shake off the long car ride. The boys jumped and splashed in the ocean only to find that they were surrounded by a group of sting rays flying through the waters. The next day we found more sand dollars in an hour than we have ever found in our lives. They boys spent hours every day looking for more. We spent so much time combing the beach for them that it became part of our daily beach habits. One morning, we set our alarm to get up and see the sunrise. We made our coffee, and snuck out of the house quietly to do our short trek to the beach. We walked quietly, holding hands, scanning the ground for shells and sand dollars, occasionally bending over to inspect things we found. While Margot’s back was turned, Hayda said nonchalantly, “hey babe. Look what I found?” Margot turned, expecting to see a shell or a sand dollar, to find Hayda holding out a diamond ring.
