Herstory

2014 - present

David and I met on a mission trip in Haiti with our dads. Soo they practically set us up! The first night in Cap-Haïtien, he joined me on the mountain hotel porch, where we listened to the sounds of the jungle and city below us. We found ourselves talking late into the night while it rained. Eventually, we got sleepy and just sat in silence, listening to the rain together. David made me go to bed, because he didn't want me to get bit by mosquitoes :) Which was sweet, so I said goodnight reluctlantly. It was such a nice first conversation, and I wanted to get to know him better. The rest of the trip, we'd stay up late reading books in the compound, waking up early for Bible study, and working on projects with the locals. The more time I spent with David, the more I saw that he was so kind, patient, humble, gentle, funny, spontaneous, hard-working, selfless, and just wonderful to be around. Plus, he was really good with kids, his eyes sparkled when he laughed, and his butt looked v. cute in grey sweatpants. (Apparently I wasn't the only one who thought so, because a random woman slapped his butt while we were riding on the back of a tap-tap LOL.) Eventually the trip came to an end, and as we stood in the airport ready to part ways, David took out a pen and wrote his number on my boarding pass, in case I needed "advice in college." We talked everyday, and after 1/2 a year, David came to visit me in College Station, where we walked around campus at night. We explored old buildings, and I took him to all of my favorite [romantic] spots, including the H2O fountain, where we held hands after they kept 'accidentally' bumping, and the secret Rudder Tower balcony, where we shared our first kiss. Six wonderful years later, David proposed to me at Inks Lake State Park ♥

The Proposal

Inks Lake has always been a special spot to Makenzie and me. Having one of the most stunning state parks in Texas in our backyard, we took full advantage of the beautiful scenery whenever we had a chance. During the summers we would spend every chance we got in the park, whether that was taking sunset walks on the many trails, fishing at secret spots we had discovered, or cooling off with a swim in the inviting lake. So, when it came time to ask Makenzie to be my wife, it only made sense to propose at the park that meant so much to us! A few days before the proposal I went to the park with the photographer and found the perfect spot to get on one knee. On March 13, I took Makenzie on one of our favorite hikes around the water and to the top of a hill made of giant pink granite that overlooked the lake. In classic David fashion, I had taken her to the wrong spot…. The spot where I had planned to propose was about half a mile down the lake from where we were. Luckily, Makenzie had some idea of what I was planning to do so it only added to the surprise when I said that we should keep walking. My heart was racing by the time that we made it to the special spot I had found, but I was more than ready to get on one knee and ask Makenzie to be my wife! And she said yes!! I had one more surprise for my now fiancée... Our family and friends had a picnic waiting for us and were ready to congratulate the future Mr. and Mrs. David Sorrells!

What's Next?

After the wedding, we are going on a 4 day mini-moon to Harry Potter World in Florida! (David is Gryffindor and Makenzie is Slytherin, in case you were curious). We will then pack up our stuff with the Navy and say goodbye to each other while Makenzie heads to Rhode Island for ODS (Officer Development School). After 5 weeks, we will move near Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia, where Makenzie will begin her career as a Navy Nurse and we can finally begin our lives together :)
