It features a conservatory, library cafe and tea house restaurant. Once the hunting ground of Powhatan Indians, the land was once owned by Virginia Governor, Patrick Henry in 1786. The 10 acres was purchased in 1884 by Richmond businessman, Lewis Ginter. In 1920’s, 73 adjacent acres were added - eventually the property was willed to the city of Richmond with the stipulation it be developed into a botanical garden honoring Lewis Ginter. The city used the property as a tree nursery & greenhouse supplying plants for city parks for 13 years, while plans to establish a botanical garden were put in place.
This place is an absolute institution. Try the ‘Eleanor’ salad and fully-loaded, bacon pimento cheese fries. If you have never been…. It is a must eat!!
Opened in 1865, the Jefferson Hotel is an iconic part of Richmond, VA. The foyer boasts a stain glass atrium and a center fountain that used to home live alligators! Additionally, check out the cocktail bar after going down the Grand Staircase. Margaret Mitchell, the author of the novel Gone With The Wind, stayed at the Jefferson during the time that she wrote the book. It is rumored that the portrayal of the staircase in Scarlett O'Hara's Atlanta mansion was inspired by the grand staircase in the Jefferson. Lastly, don't miss the little historic section (complete with artifacts) tucked under the Grand Staircase to learn more about this Iconic Richmond Hotel! https://www.jeffersonhotel.com/press-room/history

Maymont is a 100-acre Victorian estate and public park. It contains Maymont Mansion, now a historic house museum, an arboretum, formal gardens, a carriage collection, native wildlife exhibits, a nature center, and Children's Farm. In addition to the farm animals that it keeps in the Children's Farm, Maymont is the permanent home of several animals that are native to the Commonwealth. Many of these have been injured and are otherwise unable to live in the wild. These animals include bald eagles, a bobcat, black bears and foxes. Visitors are also able to see white-tailed deer, elk, and American bison. The arboretum features a Japanese garden, and also contains more than 200 species of trees and woody plants. It includes a number of "exotic champions." Bring a picnic lunch (from Secret Sandwich!) and a blanket to enjoy the spring weather here.
Historic restaurant In the Shockoe Bottom area, where the streets turn to hand-laid-cobblestone. Incredible historic building - Excellent menu, does tend to be on the pricier side. Consider going here for happy hour at the bar. Call ahead to be there when there’s live music. The interior’s focal point is a cool, three-story atrium with an exposed antique elevator to carry guests from the first floor cocktail lounge to the two dining floors above. The building, once a tobacco warehouse, dates back to 1866; all brickwork, heavy beams, and columns are original to the building. The space was renovated and opened as The Tobacco Company Restaurant in July 1977.
