Matt and Lily met through mutual friends in college. Matt was studying abroad in Rome. Meanwhile, Lily made some new friends, all of which were Matt's friends. When Matt came back from Rome, Matt, Lily, and their friends attended Wakarusa Music Festival in Arkansas in June 2013. They spent a weekend listening to music in the rain, knee-deep in mud. When Lily returned home from the festival, she told her mom and sister that she met the person she was going to marry.
