Question

What is a Pittsburgh Cookie Table and how can I participate?

Answer

The Pittsburgh Cookie Table consists of home-baked sweets by friends and family of the bride and groom. Due to COVID, we will no longer be hosting a baking event. However, please feel free to bake cookies at home and bring them with you. Please email LevinStudd@gmail.com if you plan on participating in this fun tradition!

Question

What is the history of the Pittsburgh Cookie Table?

Answer

"The cookie table came out of the 1930s, when Pittsburgh was taking an economic beating from the one-two punch of the collapse of the coal industry and the crippling Great Depression. Many immigrants found themselves living in relative poverty [and their goal] was to marry off their kids to cut expenses—and to do it quickly ... Cakes, especially during the Depression, were luxuries that required expensive ingredients—eggs, butter, sugar, and flour. Instead, families began to modify these ingredients to use a more rationed, yet creative way. By forgoing the customary wedding cake due to financial burdens, Pittsburgh immigrant families were inadvertently starting a new tradition." - https://www.tastecooking.com/pennsylvanias-best-wedding-tradition-cookie-table/
