On a memorable late-August evening many, many years ago in New York City’s Meatpacking District, a sleep deprived and overworked Lend was looking forward to a lively evening of cocktails and good food with a close group of friends he hadn’t seen in a while. Lucky for him, a well-rested but equally overworked Charlotte was also looking forward to a fun night on the town with some friends, and lucky for both of them, it was the same group of friends. A few txakolis and Miller Lights later, and after an unfortunate round of credit card roulette, the two hit it off quite well despite Lend’s best efforts to mess everything up, including (but not limited to) forgetting Charlotte’s name just as they were exchanging their contact information. All ended well, however, largely due to the same friends that were passing around the drinks that caused Lend’s temporary amnesia, all of whom ensured Charlotte of Lend’s strong character, loyalty, intelligence and good looks.

It started out as many Sunday mornings do in their apartment – Charlotte woke up early for a client meeting while Lend slept off the decisions he made the previous evening. They regrouped a few hours later for brunch in the Upper East Side, just off of Central Park. Knowing Charlotte’s love of the park’s landscape and trails, Lend suggested they take full advantage of the wonderful spring weather and walk through the park to get home. Both overlooked the fact that, given the nice weather after a long and dreary winter, every other New Yorker had the same idea, making for a very crowded day in Central Park and turning what was supposed to be a leisurely stroll into a stressful commute. Perfect start! Finally returning to their apartment, they decided to enjoy the sun and a bottle of champagne on their building’s roof deck, which was miraculously not occupied by anyone else at that time (probably because they were in Central Park). Wanting to capitalize on the moment, Lend rushed the famously indecisive Charlotte to find a spot to sit, and when she turned to him after setting the table, she found Lend on one knee, ring in hand, asking the question “Will you marry me?” Caught off guard, Charlotte became very emotional with what Lend thought might be tears of joy, but given the gravity of the moment, he wanted to hear a clear “YES” and he didn’t believe he had. Never one to presume, and somewhat confused, he asked her again to clarify her position (which was overwhelmingly in the affirmative) before he put the ring on her finger and finally got off his knees. They kept the day’s events between themselves that night and enjoyed the whole day together (somewhat of a rarity in their life), and shared the news with their friends and family the following day, many of whom were thrilled for the couple and relieved that Lend had finally “stepped up”. ---

Il y a de nombreuses années a New York, lors d’un soir de fin Août, un jeune homme prénommé Lend, en manque de sommeil et surchargé de travail, était impatient de retrouver un groupe d’amis qu’il n’avait pas vu depuis longtemps. De son côté, une jeune fille prénommée Charlotte, également surchargée de travail, avait décidé de rejoindre JJ et ses amis pour un apéritif dans le Meatpacking District. Par chance pour ces deux, c'était le même groupe d'amis. Quelques verres de Txakolis et Miller Lights plus tard, et une malheureuse partie de « credit card roulette » perdu par Lend, les deux tourtereaux ne se lâchent plus de la soirée – jusqu’à ce que Lend oublie le prénom de Charlotte... Tout se termina finalement bien grâce, en grande partie, aux amis de Lend qui vantèrent les qualités du jeune homme auprès de Charlotte : caractère fort, loyauté, intelligence et bien sûr belle allure.

Un samedi matin, Charlotte part en rendez-vous avec des clients tandis que Lend dort encore pour se remettre des grandes décisions prises la veille… Ils se retrouvent plus tard dans l’Upper East Side pour bruncher. Lend, connaissant la passion de Charlotte pour Central Park, propose de le traverser pour rentrer et profiter de cette magnifique journée de printemps… Mais ils n’étaient pas les seuls à avoir eux l’idée de profiter des premiers beaux jours dans le parc. Ce qui était censé être une promenade langoureuse se transforma rapidement en un parcours du combattant. Arrivant enfin à leur appartement, ils décidèrent de profiter du soleil et d’ouvrir une bouteille de champagne sur le rooftop de leur immeuble, qui était miraculeusement inoccupé à ce moment-là (tout le monde étant probablement à Central Park). Ayant peur d’être interrompu à tout moment par d’autre résidents de l’immeuble, Lend insista auprès de Charlotte pour prendre une décision rapide sur l’endroit où s'installer. Après avoir posé les verres et la bouteille, elle se tourna vers Lend et le retrouva un genou à terre, une bague à la main, lui posant la question " Veux tu m’épouser ? ". Prise au dépourvu, Charlotte fond en larmes et ne peut dire mot. Lend suppose alors que ce sont des larmes de joie mais vu l’importance de la question, il voulait entendre un "OUI" clair. Il lui demande alors à nouveau de clarifier sa réponse (qui était positive) avant de lui passer la bague au doigt. Ils décidèrent de garder cet heureux événement pour eux et profiter de la journée entière ensemble (quelque chose d'assez rare dans leur vie). C’est seulement le lendemain qu’ils partagent la bonne nouvelle avec leurs amis et famille, dont beaucoup ont été ravis pour le couple et soulagés que Lend ait finalement passé le pas!
