Travel and Accommodations
Ken has completed the scenic drive to Smithers dozens of times in all conditions imaginable. His main concern, besides the weather, is remaining vigilante for wildlife. If there is a road sign for wildlife it's usually there for a good reason.
The drive to Smithers via Highway 16 takes about 12 hours but there are a few places along the way you can overnight. If you just want a headstart to the trip we'd suggest staying in Hinton (3 hours). Otherwise, the two recommended halfway points will be Valemount (5 hours) or McBride (5.5 hours) and it's not a bad idea to gas up before continuing from here as Prince George is the next gas stop about 200 lonely km later. Use your navigation going through PG as it's not a straight-through route. After PG the route is sprinkled with little towns and reserves to keep you company.
There are a few hotels and Airbnb's in and around town. Camping is an option as well with a few nice campgrounds by lakes or the Bulkley River. Ask us about it!
