Despite being Atlanta natives, and living less than 5 miles apart for most of their adult lives, Stephen and Kate actually met in Memphis at their friends' wedding. They got to know each other while walking around the city, taking pictures of murals, and enjoying the hotel’s free chocolate chip cookies. By the time of the ceremony, they were sitting next to one another. And by the time of the reception, Stephen and Kate were dancing the night away. The next day they agreed to meet up and watch the ducks walk across the lobby of the Peabody Hotel. They found out that they were on the same flight home, which was much later in the day (discount fares), so they walked through the Memphis Rock and Roll Museum together. Ultimately, they flew home on the same flight, and exchanged numbers. A few days later, Kate summoned enough courage to ask Stephen to the pre-season Falcons game at the brand new stadium. Stephen replied “unquestionably!” They had a great time, and rest is history.
On December 26, 2020, Kate and Stephen enjoyed perfect weather while paddle boarding on vacation. Kate was proud of herself for standing up and feeling well balanced on her board. She kept saying that this could be the highlight of the trip. A few minute later, Stephen saw a hydrofoil, something Stephen had been talking about wanting to see, for months. Kate talked about how Stephen might talk about this for a long time because he gets excited about the things he loves. As they paddled back into their cove, Stephen took to a knee (on the paddle board), using Kate's line, "Talking about things I get excited about and I love... I love spending time with you... paddling with you... Katherine Hausmann, will you marry me?" After saying “for real, for real?”, Kate said YES! We can’t wait to share our love for each other with y’all!
