Take a rental car or join a tour to take part in the Puerto Rican tradition of chinchorreo. Drive along the coast, making stops along the way to sample street food, enjoy a drink, and hang with friends. Try empanadillas, pinchos, alcapurrias, piononos, just say yesyes.
Walk along cobblestone streets lined with colorful houses, browse the shops, or take a tour of the second oldest cathedral in the Americas. Order a pina colada at Barrachina--one of two establishments who claims to have invented the delicious drink!
If you can only take so much of the beach, take a tour to El Yunque, the rainforest of Puerto Rico, filled with waterfalls, wildlife, and neat-ure! Hiking skill level required is zero--even Julio and I enjoyed it :-). The hotel will have a tour group you can join. I'll be at the beach or on a chinchorreo jaja.
If you're looking for some night life, La Placita is a 20 minute walk or a 7 minute cab/uber ride from the hotel. You'll find bars, clubs, and lots of perreo (see "Learn Spanish" below) !
An island off the island. Take a 45 minute ferry to spend the day on this island that hosts one of the world's top beaches, Flamenco Beach.
Orozco's on Ashford Ave is our favorite restaurant in San Juan. Pour their hot sauce on everything, it is the best you'll ever have. It has been featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, but we knew it first!! -Mofongo -Chillo Entero -Bistec Encebollado *Rice and beans and tostones with everything!
