Origin Story

A Decade in the Making

One of the most special things about getting married in 2020 is that this year marks our 10 year anniversary! Ten years ago we met in college at Arizona State University. At the time, I was a freshman in mechanical engineering (I would switch to civil engineering the following year) and Ross was a Sophomore in material science and engineering. We both joined the same engineering student organization during the Spring 2010 semester. After meetings and events continued to bring us together on a weekly basis, we started to talk more, started to hang out more, and eventually started dating later that summer. Neither one of us realized at the time that over the next ten years we would go on to stand by each other's side through final exams, graduations, graduate school, first jobs, travels around the world, pageants, a first home purchase, a kitchen remodel, and moving clear across the country together. Hello east coast! Both of us have grown substantially over the years, and so has our relationship. We are absolutely thrilled to be taking this next step in our journey together and excited that our family and friends (that's you!) will be there to celebrate our wedding day with us!

The Proposal

A Night To Remember

Conversations about marriage and long term relationship plans had come up quite a bit in our discussions. It was obvious to the both of us that we would eventually get married and the time was finally starting to feel right. Ross was established in his career, and I had finally finished grad school and was well into my first full time gig. So much into my first full time gig that I hadn't taken a real vacation in over a year! And that is when Ross started dropping the hints. He lovingly, yet sarcastically declared that "If only you'd take a vacation, maybe I'd propose". I also knew something was up when he tried multiple pulley bearings (for the car's idler pulley) on my finger for "fun", aka ring sizing. Fast forward to November of 2017 when we had finally planned a vacation to the Galapagos Islands. I had my suspicions that Ross would be proposing during this vacation. However, he took me by surprise. The night before vacation departure, Ross took me out to dinner at the Farm At South Mountain. It didn't seem all that weird to me because just the day before I had suggested that the we kick off our trip with some kind of celebration! So this was in line with pre-travel activities. While we were waiting for our table we wandered around the beautiful farm grounds - imagine the smell of fresh grass, flowers, perfect 75 degrees, overhead string lights, etc. At one point in our stroll, Ross paused. He grabbed my hands, smiled at me and kissed me lightly before getting on one knee and proposing. I was genuinely in shock. So much so that I just stood there dumbfounded for a minute, then I dropped into a squat in front of him and asked "What happens now?". He smiled, amused, and said, "Normally you would say yes!". I laughed and finally said Yes. Of course. He put the beautiful alexandrite ring on my finger and helped me back to my feet. I started to cry happy tears, but had to pull myself together enough to enjoy one of the best dinners of my life!
