An age old classic. It was my second year at Clemson. I couldn’t move into my downtown Clemson apartment until mid-August. I was staying with close friends since we had to be there early for cheer practice (shoutout Mikki Wright & Claire Gagnier). They were close friends with the legendary Sawyer Jordan, who was a student assistant with Justin, and my ADPi Semi-formal date the prior March. Justin and I had known of each other, but never actually met. One night after practice, we were having a movie night at Mikki’s when Claire received a snap chat from a Justin Speros. “Get me a date with chips and kayso” he said. He set his sights and never took no for an answer. The rest is history.
Justin made the travel squad to Seaside, FL for the fourth year in a row on my family beach trip. We had 9pm dinner reservations up the road at Cafe 30A Thursday night, so we planned to walk the beach to Bud & Alley’s for a sunset roof-top pre-dinner drink. Courtney had texted us earlier in the day “shooting for a 7:18pm eta departure.” Nothing unusual, it was hair washing day so we all needed our space & a little extra time. As we were getting ready, Courtney asked me what I was going to wear. I told her I had a green dress or a white romper. “I went in your closet the other day to see if you had anything I could wear, I saw the white romper,” she said. “You should wear that.” What are sisters for :) Around 7:15 we were ready to make our way down to the beach. Mom and Dad needed a few more minutes so Justin, Courtney, and I went ahead. Once we made it down the steps to hit the beach toward Bud and Alley’s, Courtney suddenly realized she “forgot her ID.” She turned around to run back and grab it, taking off all the hair ties from my wrist and taking my phone from my hand in the process. Slightly suspicious, mostly confused, I headed down the beach with Justin. About 100 steps later, he dropped to a knee and popped the question, just as a hidden photographer sprung into action. Minutes later, mama, dad, sister & Ray Ray were running down the steps to meet us. We ended the night celebrating at Cafe 30A with lovely flowers sent by Justin’s sweet family and champagne waiting for us at the table. A vacation we will certainly never forget!
