Our love story began back in September of 2011. We flirted back and forth over facebook for a week or so after we were connected by mutual friends. We set a date to meet at the Berlin Movie Theater where we immediately hit it off. Reminiscing that day, we both felt like we had known each other for years. We visited for some time in the parking lot then went to Brandon’s apartment to watch the movie Thor. We became boyfriend and girlfriend on September 27, 2011. Nine years worth of memories later and we’ve supported each other through Army enlistment and nursing school, introduced 4 fur-babies to our family, and moved five times within 4 different towns.
We decided to take a trip to Salem, MA for a couple days. Neither of us had been, and it was the perfect time of the year to experience the spooky traditions that the small town is known for. We had planned to stay overnight Thursday, October 15th into Friday, October 16th. For Thursday night, we purchased tickets to join a historical and haunted tour around the town. Friday was reserved for visiting shops, trying new foods, and immersing ourselves in the culture. Fast forward to Wednesday, October 14, the day before leaving for our mini-vaca. We had a filled day of waking up early to do laundry, finishing packing, and cleaning the apartment. Around lunch time, Peter, Brandon’s Grandfather, called to see if Brandon would help him with a couple errands. As we were nearly finished preparing for our trip, Brandon happily agreed to do so and set off to his Grandparent’s house. As I would find out later, Brandon’s errands took a small detour to the Rocky Hill Ferry. Brandon had texted my Dad, Bob, to see if he was available to meet. As the story goes, Brandon was more worried about asking for Mr. Kozma’s permission than he was to ask me to marry him. With the ring in his pocket, Brandon arrived at the Ferry and met with Bob who was sitting on a park bench over by the river. They had a pleasant conversation that eventually led to Brandon telling my dad how much he loves me and that he wished to marry me. Brandon asked for my hand in marriage and my dad’s answer was YES. But wait! There were two more approvals he needed to get: My childhood dog, Mandee and the newest family dog, Penny. One look at the gorgeous ring and the girls approved. Phew! The hard part was over…
While I got ready, Brandon packed the car. Around noon, we hit the road and around two, we arrived at our hotel which was about thirty minutes outside of Salem. After settling into our room, we got ready and headed towards Salem for our 6:45 History and Haunting’s of Salem tour. We arrived early and window shopped a little bit but then headed over to our tour guide location. The tour was wonderful. We learned a lot about the architecture and history of Salem (which turned out not to be nearly as witch-filled as we anticipated) and heard some spooky folklore about the haunted happenings in the town. After the tour finished, around 8:45, we found that the shops had mostly closed and that there were very few people left wandering the cobblestone streets. I was ready to go and come back in the morning but Brandon wanted to keep walking. We arrived to the end of Essex Street and to our left, there was a beautiful canopy of lights hanging above a portion of The Salem Common. Brandon said “let’s walk towards there” and so we did. Once we walked over to the park, we realized that they were set-up as backdrops for pictures. Two women approached us and asked if we’d take their picture. After taking their picture, Brandon asked if they could take ours. They, of course, said yes. The first picture they took, we had our masks on. The women asked if we wanted to take another one without our masks on and so we did. After that second picture, Brandon said “Wait, can you take one more?”. Then he reached for his pocket and turned towards me. I said “NO YOU ARE NOT!”. As he was getting on one knee, he said “Yes, I am.” I covered my eyes as they started to well up. I uncovered them and Brandon said “Jenn”, paused, then said “Will You Marry Me?”. I said “Yes, of course!”, bent over, and kissed him. I said “let me see it!”. Brandon showed the ring to me and then slipped it on my finger while the crowd that had gathered on the commons clapped and cheered. It was simply perfect.
After Brandon proposed, we stepped away from the commons and onto a sidewalk. I called my dad and then we called Laura and Peter, Brandon’s grandparents. All three had been secretly anticipating our engagement all day. We took a few more pictures on the commons and then headed towards the car. It was around 9:30 pm at this point and very few stores were open on our way back to the hotel. But, we wanted to get some champagne to celebrate. Brandon stopped at a convenience store that sold a limited selection of alcohol and asked if it was too late to buy a bottle of champagne. The store clerk said that it was fine and we picked up a bottle of $6.99 champagne. We sat in the car while we ordered dominos and picked it up on our way back to the hotel. Once we arrived back at the hotel, Brandon asked the receptionist if they have any champagne glasses and the gentleman behind the counter said simply “No”. So, we headed up to the room where we poured two “glasses” of champagne into the disposable paper coffee cups provided by the coffee maker in our room. Brandon gave me the one with the lips printed near the rim and he used the one with the mustache. We took one sip and set it on our side table then enjoyed our pizza and sandwich from dominos. The wonderful day turned into the most perfect and magical night, one that we’ll never forget.
