Stamey's has the best barbecue in Greensboro and is a Henley favorite. Classic Lexington style barbecue (different than both the dueling Eastern and Western North Carolina style!) with slow-roasted whole pork shoulders in a vinegar based sauce with red slaw. Definitely try the hushpuppies and peach cobbler with ice cream. Megan also loves the Chicken-Q.
A 113 year-old institution on the UNC Greensboro campus where Megan's parents ate while Jody was in college and Dan was the head athletic trainer. Get the classic pink hotdogs with the best chili around, a cold glass bottled drink, and some homemade ice cream.
Hops is a relatively new addition to Greensboro but has already been rated the #1 best burgers by Trip Advisor in 2015. Jason recommends the beers.
Printworks Bistro is Megan's parents' favorite restaurant and anniversary staple. It is located within the Proximity Hotel, the first LEED Platinum certified hotel in the world and part of the O.Henry Hotel family, located just down the street.
The best Shopping Center in Greensboro, right across from the O.Henry and just down the street from Megan's childhood home. Consider stopping in for a sandwich at Jay's Deli or gyro at Pita Delight and grabbing a smoothie from Juice Shop or a warm drink from Caribou Coffee before perusing one of Jason and Megan's favorites: Barnes & Noble, Williams-Sonoma, Land's End, LOFT, or Brooks Brothers.
Downtown Greensboro has an up and coming night life. Elm Street is the hub of a lot of activity but downtown has been expanding! Grab a famous ale or sour at Natty Greene's Brewing Company (named after Nathaniel Greene, the founder of Greensboro), yummy pizza at Mellow Mushroom or a delicious desert at Cheesecakes by Alex, then head to Scuppernong books or the International Civil Rights Center & Museum at the Woolworth's where the Greensboro Sit Ins occurred.
One of Megan's favorite places as a child, this Science Center is highly interactive with an aquarium, zoo (with petting zoo portion), and museum. Be sure to check out the giant pendulum! Please note it will not be open on September 20th due to their annual Gala. Does charge admission.
A great option for kids right in downtown Greensboro. Though it's been updated since they were little, Megan's favorite was the market and her brother's favorite was the Transportation exhibit with real Greensboro firetrucks, police cars, and ambulances as well as a Petty race care and MAC truck. New exhibits include a kid-sized steam locomotive and the enormous outdoor play plaza. Does charge admission.
The Bicentennial Gardens are a Henley family favorite and Easter picture staple for years. Explore the many gorgeous gardens, trails and bronze statues, but be sure to visit Camberly's garden (one of Megan's childhood friends who died from a brain aneurysm just before high school) and the new Old Mill with a functional water wheel in the adjacent David Caldwell Historic Park which showcases colonial architecture. Also a favorite is feeding the monstrous catfish after wandering through the Bog Garden at Benjamin Park, just across Hobbs Road from the Bicentennial Garden.
The National Park commemorates the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, the largest battle in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War, during which Cornwallis lost over 25% of the British Army, weakening it substantially just months prior to the Yorktown surrender. In addition to an educational Visitor's Center and the famous General Greene statue, the National Park has great walking and running trails and the preserved 18th Century Hoskins Farm.
