What is the Pot & Kettle Club?

The Pot and Kettle Club was founded in 1900 by a group of men from Philadelphia and New York for the purpose of encouraging “riding, driving, and yachting” in a country resort for meetings and sports. Initially the club had 24 members but has now grown to a membership of 80 men. The original tradition of weekly Thursday luncheons from July through Labor Day continues, with numerous garden parties and private parties also being held at the club throughout the summer. The historic clubhouse was designed in 1900 and was built on the original 13 acres, which has now expanded to 50 acres. The interior of the club house consists of the tap-room, on one wall of which are framed photographs of the eleven former club presidents; the dining room, with a large fireplace and ornamental brick chimney, the walls around adorned with yacht pennants, and the chimney with the club flag; and a third room, also with a fireplace, formerly used for games. The custom at the Pot and Kettle has always been for the members and guests to don chef’s aprons at the club’s Thursday luncheons. Everyone wears their apron and hat, and at each weekly luncheon a toast is made “to the President of the United States”.
