A Sikh wedding ceremony is called an Anand Karaj or "blissful union" of two souls. The wedding takes place in a gurdwara or Sikh place of worship. The wedding will begin with the arrival of the "baraat" or groom's wedding party to the gurdwara. It's a fun way to start the events with dancing and a dhol (indian drum). Then, outside of the temple is the "milni" or introductions. This is all about two families coming together where everyone meets each other! Inside the gurdwara, the Anand Karaj will begin with an "ardaas" or prayer before the two people getting married are seated in front. The most significant part of a Sikh wedding is the lavaan or phere. These are four rounds the bridge and groom walk around the Guru Granth Sahib (holy book) each signifying a commitment to their new life.
The ceremony will be held in a Gurdwara or Sikh temple. Traditional Punjabi outfits are encouraged if you feel comfortable wearing them - although there is no pressure! Generally, you can wear anything as long as your shoulders and legs are covered. Everyone takes off their shoes when entering a Gurdwara (there is a separate shoe room at the Gurdwara to store them!). Everyone must also cover their head with a bandana, scarf or turban.
You can truly wear anything that makes you feel comfortable! Punjabi weddings are a joyous occasion and you can go all out for colors, jewelry, make up - anything! Traditional outfits are definitely encouraged if you would like to wear them!
