How We Met

Fall 2014

Erik's Version: Xandra and Erik met their freshman year at UNC - Chapel Hill when they both were randomly assigned to live on the fourth floor of the Granville East Tower. They quickly became close friends - dissecting every game of thrones episode together, spending late nights studying, and enjoying the chapel hill night life. Fast forward two and a half years later, while studying together in Hong Kong, their friendship took a romantic turn when sparks flew at a quaint little pub called Typhoon. And now here we are today. Xandra's Version: I will admit. Erik played the long game. First, he tutored me in Econ 101 while we lived on the same hall freshman year (but later it turns out he wasn't even in the class…odd that he offered to help). Later, he came to cheer me on at our club tennis matches (while claiming friendship even though he met the entire Lee family and was one of the only fans to attend ever). Finally, he just-so-happened to also study abroad in Hong Kong at the same time. When I met my best friend on that train platform, never had I been so excited to hug someone in my entire life. Fast forward a few weeks, and we spend every moment together. FINALLY, Erik makes a move, and the rest is history.

The Proposal

Fall 2022

Erik's Version: It was a beautiful and crisp Saturday in New York City. It was the weekend before Thanksgiving so spirits were high as we were looking forward to spending time with our families. Erik had planned a Saturday that he knew Xandra would love. It started with coffee from their favorite coffee shop, Seven Grams (which may have been because it was directly below their apartment). From there, they went to the gym and worked out together and had brunch at AbcV. Afterwards, they hung out at the apartment and relaxed as they read and listened to some music. Erik surprised Xandra and said he made a reservation for a martini bar and dinner, so they had to get all dressed up. As Xandra went to blow out all the candles so they could leave, Erik got down on one knee and asked Xandra to marry him. He had a big speech planned but sort of went blank for all of it and didn’t get to say everything. Nonetheless, from there they celebrated with drinks and a big dinner just the two of them. Two days later, they flew down to Atlanta to celebrate with the rest of their families over Thanksgiving! Xandra's Version: It was "big dinner" night. We do this quite often, so I wasn't confident that it was going to be THE night, but I did get a manicure the day before (note: this is typical behavior of a Lee girl). However, Erik had led me on for about six months as I knew that a mysterious package was delivered to our apartment (subtle, he is not), so there was no telling when the moment would arise. Then, as we're rushing out because the uber was two minutes away, Erik proposes in the living room of our first apartment together. It was perfect. There was a speech which neither of us can recall, a single photo of a ring sent to family, and a fabulous winter evening that was all planned out in New York City. It was the second best night of my life.
