Downtown Ames is what makes Ames feel like home. It has that cozy smalltown feel with added options. Our favorite places include: Dog-Eared Books (the local independent bookstore), Time Out (an arcade & bar), Della Viti (a wine bar), Sportsman Lounge (the BEST dive bar in town), Cornbred (out-of-this-world BBQ), Cafe Diem (our favorite coffee shop), and Torrent Brewing.
The Iowa State campus deserves a spot on our Ames list because it's routinely listed as a top most beautiful campus. Walk & explore the winding paths within the ISU campus and you'll be sure to understand why.
Reiman Gardens is more than just 14-aces of gardens. It often features nature-themed art installments, has a climate controlled garden housing exotic butterflies, and is also home to Elwood (the world's largest concrete gnome)!!
Just 40-miles south of Ames is Des Moines. Des Moines has a lot of offerings for great food, breweries, family-friendly activities, and thriving small businesses. Our favorite spots: Zombie Burger (zombie-themed burger joint), Barntown Brewing, Confluence Brewing, Blank Park Zoo, El Bait Shop (bar food & an extensive beer list), East Village (the neighborhood near the State Capital with a number of local shops & bars).
