Flight
United Airlines has a near monopoly on Newark Airport (EWR), but other airlines do have direct flights to there. And if you don't find good options there, check out JFK (especially flights from Mexico) and PHL. Train is an option for getting Highland Park/New Brunswick area from EWR (as are cabs or other ride sharing programs). To get from JFK to NJ, you're probably best off renting a car. Alternatively, there are services between JFK and EWR (e.g., https://www.nycairporter.com/ourservices/jfk-to-newark-airport/) and from there you can follow one of the above options for EWR.
Train
The Edison and New Brunswick station are equidistant from Highland Park, about a 45 minute to an hour train ride from NYC.

Hotel
Rates on travel sites were less than that offered to us by the hotel; but this is a good central location. Local shuttle within New Brunswick (which has many restaurants and other venues, all within easy walking distance too) is offered by the hotel; and Highland Park is just across the river.
Hotel
Not as close to Highland Park as the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick, but still quite close, a bit less pricey, and added bonus that you can take a bus from there directly (no stops!) to NYC.
Hotel
A tiny bit further from events than the Heldrich Hotel, but still quite central.
