Short version: David traveled to Mexico City (CDMX) along with his daughter Ari. What was to be a week-long vacation evolved into an added events of David teaching klezmer to kids in CDMX and David performing with local musicians at a local synagogue. Deborah worked at that synagogue and helped coordinate that event. David and Deborah first met Friday night (May 26, 2017) following Kabbalat Shabbat services (Kiddush and dinner at Jazzan Ari's home). Deborah then attended a rehearsal Monday night and danced at the klezmer music Tuesday night. On the last day of their visit (Thursday), David invited Deborah to join him and his daughter at Chapultepec Park. Deborah said yes, and they all had a lovely time at the Castillo de Chapultepec. Deborah and David stayed in touch through the magic of the internet, and after a couple of weeks, David invited Deborah to visit him in New Jersey. Deborah said yes, and they had a magical weekend which included a U2 concert, Jersey shore, visit to NYC, and checking out Highland Park (farmers' market, Shabbat services with the Minyan, klezmer rehearsal with Tsu fil Duvids, and fireworks at Donaldson Park). They've been in touch daily ever since with 2 visits to the US by Deborah and 6 visits to Mexico by David. Slightly longer version (mostly added thanks): thanks to Itzia Arroyo for telling David how great CDMX is and that he really should visit, to KlezKamp friend Avram Mlotek for writing this: https://jewishstandard.timesofisrael.com/as-jews-we-must-take-sides/, to David Tobin for discussing this article with David leading to a sharing a video of his students play a Hanukkah song and encouraging David to visit and teach klezmer to his students, and to Leslie Mizrahi for also encouraging David to come out and for suggesting connecting with Deborah to perform at Bet El. And to Leslie for being such a good friend to Deb! And to Rabbi Leo and Jazzan Ari for all they've done for us both. Gracias a todos!
