Pelion is one of Greece’s most popular year-round destinations, and for good reason. The peninsular region offers a rich blend of mythology, natural beauty and delicious food. According to Greek mythology, it was home to the legendary Centaurs, wise creatures who were half-man, half-horse, and served as the summer residence of the gods. What sets Pelion apart is its diversity, from picturesque mountain villages like Tsagarada and Makrinitsa, to the stunning beaches of Mylopotamos and Damouchari. Whether you're hiking through lush forests, enjoying fresh seafood at tavernas in fishing villages, or skiing on its slopes in the winter months, Pelion truly has something for everyone.
Let’s start close to home with Portaria, the village where the wedding will take place. Known as the “Gate of Pelion,” this mountain village is a perfect spot to kick off your time in the region. Just a short walk from the wedding venue is the famous Centaur’s Trail, a hiking path steeped in Greek mythology. It’s said that Centaurs—the legendary half-man, half-horse creatures—once roamed this very mountain. Not far from Portaria is Makrinitsa, another beautiful village. It’s often called the “balcony of Pelion” because of the incredible views it offers of the Pagasetic Gulf and Volos. While you’re there, be sure to check out the main square and its iconic fountain with four lion heads.
To get to the beaches on the Aegean Sea, you have to drive across Mount Pelion. There are also beaches on the Pagasetic Bay, but it's probably not a great idea to swim there right now because of the 2023 flood (and contamination). Mylopotamos- one of the most famous beaches, with its two shores connected by a natural rocky arch. Definitely worth a visit! Fakistra- another stunning beach, it’s a bit more secluded because it’s tricky to get to. You have to hike down a steep path, but it’s worth it! Don’t miss the Cave of Panagia Megalomata to the left of the beach—it was once a secret school during the Ottoman times. There’s also a hidden waterfall in the forest behind the beach, if you feel like exploring. Damouchari- a lovely seaside village, where parts of Mamma Mia were filmed! The village is charming, with just a few houses between olive trees, and you’ll find shops and traditional taverns right by the beach!
One of the most scenic train rides you may ever experience is on the “Moutzouris” Train. This vintage steam train departs from Ano Lechonia station and travels 15km of narrow tracks, reaching the village of Milies in about 90 minutes. Along the way, it winds through breathtaking landscapes—crossing stone bridges, deep gorges, lush forests and unforgettable views over the Pagasetic Gulf. The final stop, Milies, is a charming mountain village with a rich history. Be sure to visit the Church of Taxiarhes, a beautiful three-aisled basilica that dates back to before 1741, and the village’s historic library, one of the oldest in Greece, which holds nearly 4,000 rare books. Just a short distance from the church is the cave of the wise Centaur Chiron, a central figure in Greek mythology known as the tutor of heroes like Achilles. According to legend, this cave connects to other caves, possibly stretching as far as Malaki or even to the hill of Goritsa, near the city of Volos!
Apart from exploring Pelion, you might want to extend your trip to the Greek islands. Volos is well-connected by ferry to the Aegean islands. Close by is the Sporades archipelago, with many scattered islands (hence the name!), including Alonnisos, Skyros, Skiathos, and Skopelos. Kostas always talks about the Greek islands like they have their own unique personalities, and using this idea for the Sporades: Skiathos is the lively one, with bustling beaches and a fun nightlife; Skopelos is more laid-back, offering peaceful villages and stunning views; Alonissos is perfect for nature lovers, with its rugged beauty and protected marine park; and Skyros is the more reserved, mysterious island that not many people know much about, but it's full of hidden charm. No matter which one you choose, each Greek island has its own kind of magic and beauty! You can also hop on a ferry to other Aegean islands beyond the Sporades!
For those more into hiking, a trip to Mount Olympus is a must! It’s an epic adventure with stunning views and the chance to conquer Greece’s highest peak. We recommend saving this hike for after the wedding—so you can dance all night with us first!
Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, is a place where ancient ruins meet a modern, bustling city. You can wander through its historic sites like the White Tower, Roman Rotunda, and Byzantine walls, or get lost in its charming neighborhoods full of cafes, bars, and shops. The food scene here is amazing, with traditional tavernas offering delicious local dishes and street food at every corner.
That's right, we kept the best for last! Athens, as the place we first met, has a special hold on our hearts. Our very first date was a lovely walk around the Parthenon! We hope you enjoy a stop in Athens, visiting the Acropolis and exploring the beautiful center.
