Cynthia was a first year medical student at WashU. Kevin was a recently accepted prospective student. There was a "day in the life of a first year" shadowing program where prospective students could shadow a current first year during second-look weekend to see what med student life was like. Kevin (not so randomly) selected Cynthia off the list of first year volunteers. He followed her around that day for the shadowing program and has been following her around ever since! ;)
