How We Met

The best risk we ever took

We met online in 2012 because we were both bored and wanted to make a new friend. He was attending Queens University in Charlotte, NC and I had just moved back to Charlotte from Yountville, California. At the time we were both only looking for friends and fortunately with our lives going in different directions we stayed in touch and remained friends for 11 years. On our first date, which lasted 3 days, Christian took me to my favorite museum, a few meals, and a lot of memories. By the end of our first date, we knew we were bound. (Chris here, it was a set up from the start, she told me she was going to make it to where I didn't want to leave. Leaving that Monday, I was already looking for ways to move up to Charlotte)

The Proposal

4/20/2024

Candace's Perspective: The day of the proposal my best friend was coming into town and Christian said we were going to a nice dinner that night. That day I planned to wear a hoodie and jeans and by God's grace my baby sister got my mom to convince me to put on something else! Christian gave us a scavenger hunt with a code and said whoever finished first and solved the code was the winner. We drove all around town, got ice cream, and had fun taking pictures. The end of the scavenger hunt was at Freedom Park. By the time we got there, lanterns lined a hill up to a private area of the park. My family and close friends were there, and I was in disbelief! He proposed and I said yes. After the proposal I found out the code to the scavenger hunt was "Will you be my wife". Christian's Perspective: So since I knew about it a bit longer, I guess I'll give more of the behind the scenes. From the first date, I was told that she wasn't going anywhere and that I 'needed to figure out what I wanted to do with that information', so I did. One thing about Candace, she'll give you information about what she wants, so it made my process a bit easier. One day, I ordered a ring sizer, and when it came in, I walked over and measured her finger and walked away. I used pictures of rings that she said she liked to design the one that she now has. The date was a bit tricky because I was looking at numbers. It was going to be between 03.03.24 and 4.20.20.24. The first one was a combination of our favorite numbers, hers 3, and mine 2 & 4. And they both added up to 6. The second is a palindrome. I like numbers, you can fine me. Once I had the date, I added my accountability partners, Katie (Candace's best friend) and my cousins/best friends. The planning was on from there. I wanted to find a way that would show a bit of love and fun, so the park and the scavenger hunt were pretty cool to go to. Trying to figure out clues that wouldn't take too long to figure out and also weren't too easy was a challenge, but the challenge was accepted. Around December, I began ritually 'kicking her out for the day' so she would get her nails done and have a self care day so she wouldn't suspect when I had to do it before the proposal. It also gave me some time to get packages in and plans done without interruption like a lot of boxes from Amazon, the ring when it came, and scoping out the park. The week of the proposal, someone (Candace) realized that she had some plans to do that morning, and after some reframing, I realized that probably would help me out a lot with setup. Then, while out, she got into errands and seeing people, which also helped because people started calling/texting for more details. Also, thank you to my updaters who let me know what she was planning to wear so I was able to intervene. (Thank you Simone) While we got a bit of a late start, I was glad when Katie came to get her to start off the hunt. I created the rules to help me stay up-to-date on where they'd be. While they were on their hunt, I was setting out to the park to set up and meet people. I would send updates of my 'scavenger hunt' because the when she got to the last one on hers, I would call her to ask for help with mine. I talked to my sisters on the way to the park. Directing people where to go and setting up wasn't too bad. I knew where Candace was, and that gave me some wiggle room. I was sweating, and even though it was hot, there was some nerves there. After giving my brother a call while they were heading over, I was ready to go. Her mom was initially worried that Candace would see all of them, but through travel, I've noticed that with me, she just zones out and follows, so that wasn't too big on the scale. We got in the enclosed area, and I just spoke. I watched her face while it registered and very rarely is this woman stunned and stuck. But, she did say yes, and here we are. Did I spend almost 3000 characters writing this? Yes, but you're welcome -Christian
