Big river. It's cool and it flows all the way to Arkansas. You can fly fish or just take a trip to go look at it.
Close to our hearts and a personal favorite. The hot spring river alone is worth the entry fee.
$7-10 entry fee per car. Pack a cooler with drinks and snacks and some chairs or beach blankets to go lounge in the sand at some of the most gorgeous alpine lakes that are so freely accessible (minus the half-day long hikes that it takes to get to many alpine lakes of similar caliber and views).
We've yet to go rafting in Buena Vista ourselves, but we often camp in Brown's Canyon and love the area. We can almost 10/10 assume it'll be an awesome experience.
Best cocktails, delicious food, and great interior design. One of Chloe's top 5 favorite restaurants for sure.
Good food, casual mood, local craft beer.
Schedule a brewery tour and/or head to the tasting room!
They offer horseback riding and other fun excursions plus a scenic location right below the Chalk Cliffs. Recommend making reservations ahead of time.
A 6-ish mile out and back trail to a gorgeous waterfall and swimming hole. One of our favorites and would highly recommend. It's a little steep at first, but otherwise, it's a fairly relaxed trail and the views of Mount Antero and the waterfall at the end are 100% worth it.
St. Elmo is a cute little semi-revived ghost town on top of a mountain. You can access it in any vehicle (shouldn't need 4WD in Oct.) via a dirt road. There's an old school general store, historic buildings, occasionally an antique market, and a PLETHORA of chipmunks who will happily climb all over you for the sunflower seeds sold at the general store.
We can't make any promises because the trees can be fickle. But, ideally, early October will be the best time of year to view Colorado's world-famous aspen leaves as they turn bright gold. And Monarch Pass is probably one of the best places to do just that.
