Tipping Culture

New Yorkers in the service industries (hotels, restaurants and transportation) usually have gratuity factored into their wages, so tips are expected and greatly appreciated. Here’s how much you should tip: Hotel bellhops: $1–$2 per bag. Hotel doorman: $1-$2 for hailing a cab. Housekeeping: $1-$2 per day of your stay. Waiters: 15%-20% of total bill, though at higher-end restaurants, a solid 20% is more the norm. Bartenders: At least $1 for every beverage. Taxi drivers: 15%–20% of total fare. Tips for other service personnel, such as hotel concierge, tour guides and coat-check staff, are always appreciated.
