We find love in the most unexpected places. Chijioke was going into his final year of medical school and having a terrific summer. Chinelo was working in Tech and a recent transplant to Boston. They were both in very different circles and only had one mutual friend in all of Boston. It was late August and this mutual friend invited the both to an outdoor party celebrating the last day of summer. Chijioke tried to get his friends to accompany him, enticing them with phrases like "babes dey" but for some reason no one wanted to go. It is common knowledge that he doesn't even go to the movies alone but this time, something made him to go solo; call it destiny. They were introduced along with 7 other people and no one knew this would be the beginning of their forever. Chinelo was calm and a woman of few words but Chijioke could not take his eyes away. He kept finding reasons to be standing next to her and frequently trying to strike up conversation about the other guests, the nice weather or who the best African artist was. The chemistry was obvious but it was obvious that they were both shy. Before leaving, Chijioke made sure to get her number. He would shoot his shot later and #AllFall16 The following week they texted everyday and spoke on the phone often. He invited her out the following week when they spent 4 hours in the Arboretum, taking pictures of the bonsai trees and wilting rose garden and discussing their pasts, presents and dreams. From 8/28/2016 on Jiokelo was born never to be separated again
Chinelo came to Philadelphia for Memorial Day weekend without me because I “couldn’t make it”. Throughout the weekend, I updated her constantly about my time in New York with my friends while she updated me about the “graduation party” that her family would be attending. When she arrived at the rooftop of the Logan Hotel overlooking the city of Philadelphia, her whole family was assembled, rose petals on the floor, the music changed to “All of You” by John Legend and out of the back I came forward. I loved watching her face as she realized what was happening. I remember my heart racing like it had never raced before. As the tears began to roll down her eyes, I got on my left knee and asked the most important question I have ever had to ask. Well I think you can guess the rest…
