We met in high school. We had Physics class together during our junior year and began to work “independently” on our final project for the class. Kayla reached out to Cass to ask for help with the project and Cass brushed it off, thinking it was strange that the A+ student suddenly needed help, oblivious to the fact Kayla wanted a relationship. We became friends, spent late nights laughing on FaceTime, and we got to know each other. A few months later, one day at school, at the end of each hour, each of Kayla’s friends handed her a rose. At the end of the day, Kayla had a bouquet, and Cass stood at the library with a neon yellow sign reading: “Kayla Sheyenne Bowman, will you be my girlfriend?” Kayla said yes.
Kayla spent her first year of college in Boulder, CO and Cass drove up on the weekends to visit and explore the town. Cass joined her the next year. We made the decision to move in together as sophomores. We rented a tiny 500 square foot log cabin style apartment. Cass brought Archie, her chunky orange cat. We began to build our home, our social circle, and our lives with each other. We both graduated from CU Boulder (sko buffs) in 2020. Just before graduating, we decided to become vegans together as a commitment to the environment and living sustainably. After graduation, we decided to keep writing more chapters.
Kayla began law school at DU and Cass continued her education for Sustainable Interior Design. We grew our family with the addition of a little black cat named Charlie. We started looking at engagement rings and dreaming of our forever together. In 2021, on our favorite holiday, Halloween, Cass and Kayla went to the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit. When all the stars began to rise, Cass got on one knee and asked Kayla to be her wife. Kayla, sensing this was coming, did the same. We both said yes. We have flourished in our long engagement. Kayla graduated law school, passed the bar, and joined BAM Family Law. Cass graduated, got promoted, and started a new job at Floors by Remo and Company. The rest is still unwritten.
