On May 17th, 2016, Kevin sent a thoughtfully composed message to Caroline through OkCupid, an online dating app. After multiple exchanges, where their messages were paragraphs long, Kevin and Caroline met for the first time on May 25, 2016. In Old Town Pasadena, they ate at Umami Burger, walked around the city afterwards, and parted ways that night at Pasadena City Hall. Since then their dates included playing tennis, hiking, trail/5K running, mountain biking, indoor bouldering, kayaking, star-glazing, painting and fishing. The first half of their relationship consisted mostly of weekend study dates at various coffee/boba shops across the San Gabriel Valley. While Caroline was studying to get through physical therapy school, Kevin would accompany her and review his engineering textbooks. They both shared a passion for continual learning and bonded over their Cantonese heritage. What connected Kevin and Caroline the most was their mutual taste in music. From indie to alternative rock to EDM, they attended many concerts/festivals ranging from California, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado. They are always debating on who discovered which artist/song first. Kevin and Caroline look forward to many more adventures together, notably traveling internationally, scuba diving, learning rope/lead climbing, and discovering more music together, as husband and wife.
The proposal took place on May 15, 2021, almost five years to the day when they first met. In preparation, he had scouted out the location, asked her parents for their blessings, and "inconspicuously" disguised the evening as an anniversary celebration. The plan was to recreate parts of their early first dates and to end the night with a surprise proposal. They had a nice "relaxing" dinner at the Noodle Street in Old Pasadena, which had replaced Umami Burger. On top of Kevin wearing nice slacks with a belt, Caroline grew even more suspicious when Kevin barely touched his food. After dinner, they took a stroll, gradually making their way to the Westin Courtyard. Like many times in the past, they sat down next to the fountains there; it was serene - their old hideaway spot. They shared a pair of headphones and traded their latest indie music finds. The night grew long and cold, like Kevin's cold feet. After a long hospital shift that day and needing to go to work the next morning, Caroline wearily asked if they could go home. With a sense of urgency, Kevin proclaimed that there was one more thing they had to do and led her over to a more well-lit area. Amongst a familiar audience of fish, frog, and snail fountain statues, he triumphed over his nerves and got down on one knee and proposed! As the ring glistened even in the dark, Caroline magnetically knelt down, almost head-butting Kevin, and said, "YES!" Auspiciously the morning before the proposal, as Caroline was leaving for work, a sparrow was building a nest just outside her front door.
