Marfa is a very small western town in the desert. It's known for its art community and has become a destination for anyone looking to escape and slow down for a few days. There are lots of unique shops, art installations, and spots for food and drink around town. You'll notice that even with the influx of tourists because of our wedding, things in Marfa feel quiet and move a little slower. Enjoy the change of pace, bring a deck of cards or your favorite book, reconnect with people you haven't seen in a while, or make a new friend. There are two grocery stores, a gas station, and great local restaurants, any of which we would recommend over the Dairy Queen.
Marfa is a unique and beautiful small town in West Texas that we have visited many times together, and holds a special place for us and our relationship. It's full of artists, makers, and people that appreciate the serenity of the desert. It also carries some mystery that we hope you'll discover while you're there. We'd describe it, but we don't know how. We just know we go back often and feel happy when we're there.
Welcome Party: there is no dress code for the welcome party. Wear whatever you want! We will be wearing casual clothes. Ceremony and Reception: Cocktail Attire. Wear cocktail dresses, suits, LBDs, dressy jumpsuits, jackets and slacks. Since our wedding backdrop is in the West Texas desert, we also encourage flowing dresses that match the breeze, breathable suits that help with the heat, and your best Stetson hat. Note: our ceremony is on uneven, dusty ground. Keep that in mind when choosing shoes!
Marfa has a municipal airport with limited flights. Most people will come from the following locations: Midland-Odessa International Air and Space Port (MAF) - 2:45 hours from Marfa El Paso (ELP) - 3 hours from Marfa Austin (AUS) - 6:30 hours from Marfa
There is a travel page on this website with hotel recommendations. We have a Hotel Block at the Thunderbird Hotel. The Thunderbird is a 5-minute walk to our wedding venue and less than a mile from most Marfa activities. In order to reserve a room, call (432) 729-7777 and tell them you are a guest at our wedding. This hotel block will end on 02/26/2022 and any remaining rooms will be released to the public.
Apart from a few children of family members, this is an adults-only event.
The average temperature in Marfa in March is 71 degrees during the day. Like most deserts, the weather is warm in the day and cool at night but very unlikely to rain. Bring layers and be prepared for cool evenings!
The first wedding event is our welcome party on Thursday. Marfa shops are mostly closed on Mondays, so we recommend leaving on Sunday. Because of that, we did not plan any Sunday events. We have lots of recommendations for Marfa and the surrounding area which you can find on our Things To Do page. The McDonald Observatory sells out fast, so we recommend checking it out as soon as you can.
Yes! See our Things To Do page for a complete list. A very popular activity on Friday nights is attending a star party at the McDonald Observatory. We recommend checking it out sooner than later because they book fast!
Alpine is a small town 30 minutes away from Marfa. It's a manageable distance and if you're looking for a chain hotel option, that's where they will be. It has a different feel from Marfa, so we recommend checking out the local recommendations before making a decision. If you're an extrovert or a person who will feel sad not to be part of the action all weekend, we recommend staying in Marfa since that's where most people will be! If you anticipate wanting to enjoy a few cocktails, staying in Marfa means an easy walk home. We want everyone to enjoy themselves safely first and foremost, and also the local police are vigilant, especially around weddings.
Yes! We're so excited to see everyone at our wedding, we're already sad to part ways on Sunday. The two planned events where you will for sure see us are the Welcome Party on Thursday and the Wedding on Saturday. Marfa is a tiny town, so we will also see you around town all weekend. Our favorite spots are Do Your Thing for coffee in the mornings and Para Ilevar for lunch. We hope to see you there!
The ceremony is at a private location that does not allow parking. Because of that, please meet at The Sentinel at 5:00pm, where shuttles will take guests to the ceremony location. You are able to park at The Sentinel for free, it's also within walking distance from most places in town.
Your invite will include the names of all individuals invited to the wedding.
The ceremony is outdoors, and the reception has both indoor and outdoor components. We will be eating outside, and it is feasible to spend the entire wedding outside. Dancing, bathrooms, and the bar are inside.
There is plenty of street parking near The Sentinel, and it is free. There is no parking at the ceremony location, so shuttles will bring you to and from the ceremony from The Sentinel.
Yes. There is a hotel block at The Thunderbird Hotel, rooms in this block are being held for our guests until 2/26/22, so please make reservations accordingly. In order to reserve a room, call (432) 729-7777 and tell them you are a guest at our wedding. Yes. Dinner, drinks, and dessert will be served at the reception. Dinner will be family-style and includes vegan options. Please note any dietary restrictions in your RSVP so we can label dishes accordingly. Dinner will not begin until after 7:00pm, so please plan lunch accordingly.
We ask that guests refrain from photos during the ceremony, but please take and post photos at any other time!
The wedding begins at 5:00pm with travel from The Sentinel to the ceremony location. A reception will follow at The Sentinel, where we'll enjoy drinks, food, and other reception events. There are a few local bars nearby that are promising for an unofficial after-party!
Due to limited reception in Marfa, we will be unable to provide video streaming of the ceremony. We would love to connect with anyone who is unable to attend in the weeks following the wedding. Please know you are important to us regardless of whether or not you can make it to the wedding!
We strongly suggest that guests are vaccinated but are not requiring proof of vaccination in order to attend. With that being said, please take the health of our guests, event staff, and local Marfans seriously. We ask that you take a COVID test if you may have recently been exposed or if you aren't feeling well. We understand that COVID concerns vary from person to person based on a variety of factors, so please do what is best for you within the above parameters.
We do not. Feel free to influence others around you if you come up with a good one! ;)
The reception is at The Sentinel, located at 209 W El Paso St, Marfa, TX 79843. This is also the meeting location for the (mandatory) shuttle to the ceremony site.
AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all have good coverage in Marfa. The reception outside of town may be spotty.
We added some restaurants and bar recommendations to our Things To Do page, but there are other restaurants downtown Marfa. The following places have groceries, wine, beer, and spirits: 1. The Get Go - a bodega-style grocery store that has snacks, drinks, toiletries, and some grocery options. It is walkable from most hotels and Airbnb's within Marfa. They tend to carry luxury/gourmet foods, so it is a pricier (but delicious) grocery store. 2. Porter's - a larger grocery on the edge of town that has fewer luxury goods than The Get Go, but is a better place to shop for a multiple-day grocery run. 3. Cactus Liquors - the best liquor store in town.
No. Luckily, it's very easy to get around Marfa on foot.
There is not a hospital in Marfa. There is a small community clinic and pharmacy, but emergency medical care is limited. In case of emergency, call 911. The nearest hospital is 25 miles east in Alpine, TX.
We are registered through Zola. Please see the Registry page for all the info!
Please let us know about specific allergies and dietary restrictions with your RSVP.
There is no transportation from the hotels to the ceremony, the meeting place for shuttles to the ceremony is at The Sentinel.
