Meet Cute

August 4, 2014

Two weeks before law school began, the Hispanic Law Students Association hosted a Summer Boot Camp for all incoming first year law students. I walked in to the conference room on the sixth floor of the South Texas College of Law library and sat at a round table, not knowing a single person in the room. Before the lecture began, I looked across the room and saw a young, handsome man smiling and looking in my direction. I was pretty sure I did not know this man, and assumed he was looking at something that was going on outside the window behind me. So I turned a full 180 degrees to also look out the window and see what this guy was looking at! As it turns out, he was looking at me :)

She Said Yes!

August 21, 2019

It was a Wednesday when I asked Adela to marry me. Wednesday, August 21, 2019. For months, I knew I was going to propose on that day. Two years before that, I had just sent Adela an e-mail after a summer of missing her, the loneliest summer of my life! And on August 21, 2017, Adela wrote me back--she wrote me a love letter. Because of Hurricane Harvey, I wouldn't get the letter until a month later. And our love story had begun. When I thought about when I'd finally pop the question, I knew what I needed to do. I had a plan. I was going to propose inside our very first home. I'd secretly plan all the details, and everyone but Adela would know about it. You see, loving Adela has been the greatest joy of my life, and I wanted to make this proposal as perfect as she is. On the day of the proposal, I could hardly sleep. I had the ring. I had every last detail planned. That afternoon, I asked my future mother-in-law to accompany me to Adela's grandmother's house. And in Grandma Pena's living room, I asked for her blessing and her permission to take Adela's hand in marriage. I presented the ring with a smile as big as the sun. Grandma Pena gave me her blessing. I spent the rest of the day setting the scene and getting the house ready. Adela was having dinner with her mom, something I conveniently planned for her! With Adela away, I was a working man. I laid a path of rose petals on the floor. I had a dozen yellow roses (her favorite flowers!). I lit nearly 200 candles. I composed a playlist of love songs. I put together a photo album of us. And of course, I wrote Adela a love letter, pouring my heart out, once more. And when she finally opened the door, I stood, with a smile as big as the sun, diamond in pocket. Adela was STUNNED. SHOOK. SPEECHLESS! We laughed, and kissed, and cried, and danced, and held each other tight. And with My Girl playing in the background, I dropped down on one knee, and asked Adela to marry me. And she said YES!
