Our favorites are Q39 and Joe's KC. The Joe's KC original gas station restaurant is a unique experience, and the Z-Man brisket sandwich is delicious. The lines can be long at the gas station during lunch and dinner times, but there is a bar you can patronize before waiting in line. If you want to go to Q39, it's best to have reservations.
Modeled after our Spanish sister city, Seville, the Plaza is a high-end shopping and dining area. It is also nice to simply admire the architecture and many fountains.
The Nelson has a fantastic collection, and admission is free! Charles' favorite is the Impressionist gallery while Andrea likes the older European art in the collection.
If you're nearby visiting the Nelson, stop and smell the roses at these beautiful gardens. Seriously, they smell awesome especially in the greenhouse. Very worth the visit! Highly recommended by Charles, especially in the spring.
Check their website for tour options or stop by the beer hall. The beer hall's 30 tap handles include test beers available only at the beer hall. If you are on the tour and are asked what the worst thing to ever happen to the brewing industry in America was, feel free to answer with a Sean Shaughnessy classic, "The Protestant Reformation!"
This is a great spot to experience KC jazz, with live music playing for much of the day (see website for schedule).
The National World War I Museum is one of Charles' favorites. The museum offers a great view of the skyline, making it a good place to stop even if you don't plan to go inside. From here, you can walk down the hill to Union Station. The free street car leaves from outside Union Station and can be taken north through downtown to River Market. Also a great place to run into people from your hometown 354 miles away while you are out on a date and have pictures sent to your family of a girl they didn't know you were dating.
