There's no getting around it: Brooke and Teddy met on Tinder. Brooke was visiting her parents in Lexington, swiping away to find people from high school, and Teddy was doing his thing in High Point. Brooke remembers Teddy's sweet smile in his profile picture, and she noticed they had a mutual friend in Erin Tucker. Teddy noticed that Brooke had an affinity for Jeopardy and Diet Coke. Teddy also noticed Brooke had a picture in front of the Cameron Crazies at a UNC-Duke game and struck up a conversation by asking if anyone knew why the Crazies waved their arms so much (To actually quote Teddy, “did that stupid arm thing”). The rest is history.
After swapping messages for about a week on Tinder, Brooke and Teddy decided to meet at Ponysaurus for their first date. Brooke wasn't sure if this was a dinner date, so 15 minutes before she was supposed to be there, she heated up spaghetti and stuffed her face. Meanwhile, Teddy, being a perpetual early arriver, was already at Ponysaurus. Running behind schedule, Brooke texted Teddy that she was on her way when she still had a couple bites of pasta left. Then, she texted him again five minutes later to tell him she nearly ran into a small child in the hallway. Confused, Teddy looked down the hallway of the brewery, expecting to see Brooke and a small child. There was nobody there. When Brooke showed up 10 minutes later, he realized that a) this girl liked jean jackets and b) he was doomed to a lifetime of tardiness.
Teddy purchased the ring in October and hid it in the closet. Every time Brooke went in to the closet, Teddy assumed she was going to find it and so it became clear he couldn't wait until December. After meeting with the owner of a local winery, Teddy decided that on Sunday, October 15th he would bring Brooke to the winery before it opened, propose under the guise of using a Groupon for Brooke’s birthday (as one does), and then take a few pictures. Teddy decided not to put a proposal on a wine bottle and instead, put a picture of he and Brooke on two wine bottles. Teddy spent the whole week working on his proposal and finally had his speech perfected. The day finally arrived and Teddy assumed Brooke would know something was because his heart was beating out of his chest. Brooke was out of it because she had gotten back really late the night before from covering the OU-Texas game. Teddy and Brooke entered the empty winery and Teddy gave the owner his phone with “the Groupon” on it. A playlist of Brooke and Teddy’s favorite songs started playing and Brooke was…completely oblivious. The owner put the wine bottles in front of them facing away from Brooke and Teddy. They ordered a glass of wine and the owner pulled out a brand new bottle to pour from it. Brooke still went along with it. Teddy and Brooke toasted and he started the proposal. However, once he started, everything he planned to say blanked from his mind and he lost it all. Teddy’s proposal went something like this: “We are here celebrating your birthday a little early, but I just wanted to say that you are awesome, you are kind, you are my best friend (sorry Mickey and Austin), and you are….just awesome. I’m so happy we are together and I want to be with you forever.” Brooke enjoys reminding Teddy that he said “you’re awesome” twice in the same proposal. The couple assumes Brooke said yes although they were both crying and emotional, but she is wearing the ring so it seems like it.
