Nachusa Grasslands - Visitor Center

Nachusa Grasslands - Visitor Center

2075 South Lowden Road, Franklin Grove, IL 61031

The American Bison was reintroduced to this 4,000+ acre prairie in restoration. This is one of the places that makes Ogle County and Rock River country special. Great opportunities for bison viewing if you can catch them. This is like visiting Illinois 200-300 years ago when the buffalo and native prairie coexisted. Very cool, highly recommend.

Franklin Creek State Natural Area

Franklin Creek State Natural Area

1872 Twist Road, Franklin Grove, IL 61031

This on our top 5 favorite hikes in Northern Illinois. This place is a magical gem and is worth exploring. But don’t tell too many of your friends! Following a spring-fed creek, this 4-mile, strenuous-at-times trail, has three creek crossings and opportunities to see cliff walls and caves.

Lowden State Park

Lowden State Park

1411 North River Road, Oregon, IL 61061

This park has beautiful bluff overlooks of the Rock River and is home to Lorado Taft’s largest sculpture (and local mascot!), the Eternal Indian. You miiiight be able to see Stronghold's castle turret from here!

Castle Rock State Park

Castle Rock State Park

1365 West Castle Road, Oregon, IL 61061

This picturesque park has 2,000 acres with river access, trails, rock formations, bluffs, and a beautiful scenic overlook. The rock formations and soil types are unique to this part of Illinois and offer a variety of rare plants and species to thrive. A great place for a quick hike up the scenic overlook, although not for the faint of heart, the climb is worth this vista. As well as those looking for adventure, the park offers 6 miles of trail in various terrain.

Byron Dragway

Byron Dragway

7287 North River Road, Byron, IL 61010

This 1/4 mile drag strip has many races throughout the summer. Check their website for the schedule. It's a BLAST — Bronwyn had so much fun she cried.

John Deere Historic Site

Antiquing & Thrifting

Antiquing & Thrifting

ROUTE 64 VINTAGE — 101 E Washington St, Oregon, IL 61061 This is one of our favorites. The shop has curated zones that make browsing not so overwhelming. A special thank you to owner Gay for allowing us to use some pieces from her shop for our wedding! CONOVER SQUARE MALL — 201 N 3rd St, Oregon, IL 61061 This former piano factory is now home to many small antique shops. Wind your way around the hallways and floors and find treasures. DON'S FLAMINGO PALACE — 109 S 3rd St, Oregon, IL 61061 Wait 'til you get a load of this place. Vintage, tiki, MCM, Asian... this place has so many styles and so many things. Join the flock.
