Imagine a state fair on steroids mixed with professional cowboys and huge concerts every night – that's basically the Houston Rodeo (March 4-23). The whole city gets excited about this three-week party where you can watch bull riding, eat ridiculous fried foods, ride carnival rides, and see major artists perform all in the same day.
Just a half-hour drive from Wimberley, Pedernales Falls is where you'll find massive slabs of limestone that the river flows over, creating natural water slides and swimming holes when the water's calm. It's a great spot to spend a few hours scrambling over rocks, dipping your feet in the water, or just hanging out in one of the prettiest parts of the Hill Country (just check the water level before you go – it can get wild after rain).
The heart of Wimberley's charm lies in its historic downtown square, where locally-owned boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants occupy charming historic buildings beneath towering oak trees. Visitors can spend hours browsing unique Texas gifts, sampling local wines, or enjoying a meal at one of the square's eclectic eateries while soaking in the small-town atmosphere.
If you're into wine, there are some really nice spots to check out just a short drive from Wimberley – Driftwood Estate and Duchmann are local favorites, especially around sunset when the views and colors are incredible. You can spend an afternoon hopping between tasting rooms, sipping Texas-made wines while looking out over the rolling hills (way prettier than you'd expect from Texas!).
What started as a tiny Spanish mission became the site of Texas's most famous last stand in 1836 – it might be a little smaller than you expect, but it's worth checking off your list! The Alamo sits right in downtown San Antonio and next to the River Walk.
Should be prime wild flower season in March!
