Abi's grandparents lived across the lake from the house Alex grew up in. After twenty years of just missing each other, they finally crossed paths when Abi moved to Omaha—on a dating app (sorry, Mom!). Alex responded to a question in Abi's bio, "What do you do with a B.A. in English?" "Teach English in Chile," he said. That, plus the super like, got her attention.
After a few days of messaging back and forth, Alex promised to show Abi some of his favorite spots in Omaha. They met for their first date at Film Streams in Dundee. They talked about Alex's plans for law school, bonded over the difficulty and joy of nonprofit work, and discovered that they'd both spent time in the same city in Spain. Abi found herself enjoying the conversation so much she was willing to overlook the one red flag: he swore he'd never own a dog. A few dates later, they found a compromise. Alex became good friends with Abi's cat, Tat.
After two years of dating and one year living together in New York City, Alex took Abi to Colorado for the weekend. Early in the morning, he drove her out to a lake to watch the sunrise over the mountains, and while she was distracted by the view, he asked her to marry him. As they waited for the ring to be resized and reset, he got her the perfect starter ring—a chocolate donut.
