We met teaching pottery classes at Little House Big Art herein Pittsburgh. Both art school grads, we each held a few jobs, making art on the side. Mike was making contemporary work inspired by the relationship of Jasper John’s and Robert Rauschenberg. While Amrit, newly on the Makerspace scene, was exploring needlefelting and resin casting. We supported each other in finding creative jobs, working at The Childrens Mumseum of Pittsburgh’s Makeshop, and eventually running Provident Charter School’s Makerspace. Mike began the Makerspace in 2015, and Amrit has run it for the past 4 years. It’s probably our longest running “body of work”. We’re seldom far from this second home, as we moved into our first house in the same neighborhood a year ago. Probably our greatest collaboration yet, we’ve put in countless hours making this sweet 1950’s ranch into the home we share with our purrfect pals, Purrcy and Toby. Mike is now the fairy godmother of my woodshop, but it was probably those first few months of him washing dishes in his SUNY Oswego cut offs that had me hooked.
After 6 short years of dating Mike proposed on a vacation to StThomas USVI. Just days prior we had gone out sailing with Captain Danny Bouy and the Snorkel Cat crew. Mike quickly friended the captain, and was invited back for a sunset sail. Sailing past tiny islands the boat turned around to face the sunset and that’s when Mike made his big move. The second biggest surprise was the incredible ring Mike designed with Pittsburgh artist Sam Skelton.
