On a chilly December night, we happened to meet through a mutual friend. Thinking back, we first met in my car when I picked a friend of my friends up. From there we drove to Hamburg Inn (we recommend highly). Walking in to the restaurant, I finally saw Nick for the first time. But that wasn’t our night... A few months later in April, that same friend invited me to go out downtown Iowa City. She also invited Nick. We met at Cactus (our typical pregame meal) and had tacos and margaritas. We began to chat more freely that night and by the end of the night we were dancing and laughing. We exchanged information, and at that point I knew I liked Nick. But that wasn’t our night... Fast forward to September. It was the Iowa v. Iowa State game, in Iowa City even. We hadn’t talked in months. The same friend, invited Nick to tailgate with us. We started out awkward, since it had been awhile since we talked. Soon, the conversation flowed like it had before. I left the tailgate early, but we continued to text back and forth. Closer, but still wasn’t our night... A few weeks later, September 15th to be exact (I now know this is Nick’s Birthday, I didn’t at the time). We met back at Cactus, this time I had invited you. We laughed and danced all night and had an amazing time. Nick’s goofy side came out. Still wasn’t our night... After that night, we continued to talk pretty much every day. Nick asked me out on our first date a few days later. September 21, 2016 WAS our night. I picked Nick up and we went to Blackstone (this has become our favorite restaurant since). It was the typical nervous first date, but so amazing at the same time. From that day on, we tried to spend more and more time together, even if we had to spend time together at the library studying. Nick became my best friend on that September night, and will always be.
After coming home from a concert in Des Moines, Nick had asked Amelia to go to their favorite reataurant, Blackstone. Amelia had a baby shower to go to that day that was close to Blackstone. The original plan was for Amelia to drive herself to the baby shower and then go to the restaurant after. Last minute, Amelia asked Nick instead to just take her to the baby shower and she could run in to say hi and come back to the car. Nick agreed, knowing that wouldn’t be the case. Amelia, instead spent around 45 minutes at the baby shower while Nick waited in the car. Finally, Amelia came out and apologized about taking so long. Nick said it was okay, and drove to the restaurant. The dinner went as it normally would, we each got a drink, had our meal and the check came. Nick looked down and said, “You know what I left in the car? My wallet. I will be right back.” Amelia stayed at the table and drank her martini. It felt like eternity and she finally started tracking the time he was gone, wondering if something was wrong. Three more minutes passed and Amelia started looking around for Nick with him no where in sight. A few minutes later, Nick appeared at the table and said “Hey babe, I have a question for you.” Nick was on one knee. Amelia couldn’t help but just start saying “yes”. Being the smart man Nick is, he had the hostess take pictures for me and she also brought us a bottle of champaign!
