The Willamette National Forest and Mount Washington Wilderness areas offer the world-famous McKenzie River National Recreation Trail, the scenic Blue Pool, and other incredible sections of the McKenzie River and mountain lakes.
This waterfall loop around the McKenzie River’s two grandest cascades is a must! Thousands of years ago, the lava flow that dammed the nearby Clear Lake made its way into the McKenzie River and created these breathtaking 100-foot high falls, as well as the neighboring Koosah Falls. The names of the falls come from the Chinook language. The word sahalie roughly translates to “heaven” and koosah translates to “sky.” Accessible within a few minutes from the trailhead parking lot, the 2.6 mile loop hike starts at 100-foot-tall Sahalie Falls, a raging cataract that pounds the river into rainbowed mist. Then the loop descends past 70-foot Koosah Falls and returns on the river’s far shore through forests of 6-foot-thick Douglas fir and droopy-limbed red cedar. NOTE: Recreation Passes are required when parking at trailheads. Day passes are $5
On your way back from seeing Koosah and Sahalie falls stop at Tamolich Trailhead just off the McKenzie Highway (OR-126). The hike is a 3.6 mile out-and-back trail that leads you to a pristine turquoise pool. The Tamolitch Falls Blue Pools, better known as simply the “Blue Pool” nestled in Oregon’s McKenzie River Valley at the foot of the seasonal Tamolitch Falls, are a sight to behold. With strikingly blue water due to the filtration of the lava fields below and a pretty easy walk to get there, this magical place in Oregon is popular with photographers and hikers alike.
Tucked away in the Three Sisters Wilderness, Proxy Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Oregon. The sheer beauty of the falls entices large swaths of visitors, and the short hike on the way to the falls is also laden with scenic views. The falls sink through the porous lava rocks below and into the ground. An unpaved foot trail loops around lava fields and dense conifer forests with view points to Proxy Falls and the smaller Upper Proxy Falls. It starts at the trailhead off highway 242 and it totals 1.6 miles. The counterclockwise direction of the loop leads off to Proxy Falls, whereas on the opposite direction it leads to Upper Proxy Falls. Access to the base of Proxy Falls spins off the main trail and it requires crossing Proxy river. Upper Proxy Falls stem from an unnamed river in close proximity to Proxy creek.
Just 5 minutes away from Loloma Lodge, Belknap Hot Springs is located on the McKenzie River and is one of Central Oregon’s hidden jewels. Open 365 days of the year with two mineral hot spring pools and many acres of gardens... including the extravagant Secret Garden, Belknap offers a relaxing experience not soon to be forgotten.
Less than 25 minutes away is beautiful Clear Lake. Three thousand years ago, a volcanic eruption in Central Oregon pushed a giant flow of lava southwest toward the McKenzie River. The lava scorched the forest and redirected the flow of the river, creating what’s known as Clear Lake. Today, the pristine lake is home to a remarkably preserved ancient forest beneath its sparkling turquoise waters. It’s a premier spot for playing on the water — fishing, canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddling. It’s also known for its hiking and biking on the world-renowned McKenzie River Trail.
