We met freshman year at Baylor University. We were both in Army ROTC together & just happened to live in the dorms across from each other. We started out as close friends - eating late night cereal at Penland, catching whatever movie we had time for, getting kicked out of Chapel (Steven, not Sav), and walking to PT bright and early. Things happen and friends get distant but good ones always come back - thank God for that. Junior year of college we both needed a friend and found each other again. Close friends turned into best friends chasing a thunderstorm one night. A kiss ended the night but started our new chapter of adventures together. After a year plus of stubbornness from Savannah, incredible patience from Steven, and many MANY adventures - we ended up here. When we weren't even dating, we had talked before about how in Heaven you're not married to your Earthly spouse anymore but are reunited with friends and family. Sitting on the coach one night, watching movies as we do, this was said - "it's pretty cool that even when we die we get to keep hanging out in Heaven". No matter what we will be each other's best friend... but getting to share a last name is pretty cool, too.
I had known since December that Savannah was the one for me so that's when I asked my parents for the family ring. After that I wanted to wait till the right time to talk to Mr. Jacobs to get his permission. I know that some people don't see this part as important as proposing, but I have always believed that her Father saying yes was the just as crucial as to her saying yes. He has been the provider, protector, and teacher to Savannah for her whole life, and I have to show him that I am able to take on the responsibility to do so too. The difficult part is that Mr. Jacobs works outside the country so finding a time to meet with him in person is tricky. So this is where the scheming comes into play. I wanted the proposal to be a surprise for Sav so I had to take extra care in how I made my plan and who I had help me. (Sorry Julia, you woulda let the secret slip). The plan was simple. I was in California with my family so I knew that to talk to Mr. Jacobs I would need to fly to Texas and do so without Sav knowing. So I called Kim to see when Mr. Jacobs would be home and I booked a flight right away! The next steps were to coordinate how I was gonna actually propose. First, I contacted her good friend Lauren to see how we could get Sav off of work the day I would be there. Lauren's mom recommended that Lauren invite Sav to a fake wedding because that would get her off work and it would get her dressed up. Then I called my friend Sam and coordinated with him to be the photographer. The hardest part of planning was getting Savannah to think I was still in California when I was really in Texas so I told her that I was working for my Mom in Nevada and would need to drive out there. (This accounts for the flight time). I made a video of myself traveling to Texas and at the end of the video I told Sav to come outside. When I sent the video to her I was on my way to her house so that when she finished watching the video I was waiting there on the lawn for her.
