How we met…

August 17, 2021

Abigail had just moved into her dorm room at Carson-Newman University and was preparing for her first day of class. She wasn’t feeling well but she thought she was just tired from the trip from her hometown of Colorado Springs. Turns out, she had a nasty kidney infection and had to go to the emergency room the night before classes started. She woke up the next morning and made it down to the cafeteria for breakfast and devotional still not feeling well. Everyone was in class on the first day so there were not many students in the cafeteria. She didn’t mind because she knew she needed some rest and didn’t want to try and make new friends that day. While she was catching up on her Sunday sermon from her home church, Luke asked if he could sit and have breakfast with her. He had a completely different schedule than Abigail and the would have probably never met if Abigail hadn’t have gone to the emergency room. They made small talk and Abigail asked “is there anything fun to do around here?” Luke was beginning his second year as a transfer student at Carson-Newman and he suggested that they should go to the nearby lake and go swimming. In the week leading up to the beginning of school quite a few people would sit down and talk with Abigail and suggest going to the lake nearby but no one had actually followed through. Abigail suggested that Luke should take her sometime as they exchanged phone numbers. Luke went to class and Abigail returned to her bible study. She was feeling better and decided to attend classes that afternoon. Later that day, Luke texted Abigail and said “Want to go swimming today? It’s as good a day as any. You can invite any friends you want.” This shocked Abigail first because she hadn’t made any friends yet and secondly she had watched too much true crime movies to know better than to run off with a man who you just met in his car to a lake. So after her last class of the day she ran back to her dorm room giddy with excitement. She put on her swimsuit and jotted down a quick sticky note to her new roommate giving a brief description of Luke and where they were going. Just in case. Abigail ran down the stairs, hopped in Luke’s noisy Honda CRV and off they were to the lake. At the lake they had a wonderful time sitting on the beach and talking, and decided to meet up again for dinner at the cafeteria. Later that night, Abigail was thinking about how just less than 24 hours ago she was in the emergency room, away from her family, and anxious thoughts had taken her over and given her no hope for the future and now she at least had one friend.

For all the days along the way
