Originally called Cold Spring Ranch due to an ice cold spring. The Dorrington Hotel was built in 1852 by John Gardner who married Rebecca Dorrington and moved her out from Scotland. The whimsy runs deep in the history of the space; perched upon a succulent covered slice of heaven in the heart of Sur Country. It all started with Alice Jaeger - the legend at the heart of the our story. In 1929, while the Pacific Coast Highway was under initial construction, Alice began plans for a homestead haven to offer travelers a place to rest & refuel. Alice planted cacti & succulents by hand throughout the land. With her husband, Steve, a ranch-style home was built in 1936. It later became a diner + tiny inn; a gathering place for locals and wanderers to rest, refuel, and nourish with a homegrown meal. That ranch-home is what we call Big Sur Bakery today. We're honored to carry on the traditions. The unique charm of Big Sur Bakery is built into the walls & windows through the tales of every single love story that has graced our sweet little rest-stop-meets-bakeshop we call home.
