Humans are estimated to have settled in the area around 10,000 years ago, after the Missoula Floods carved rivers into the valley. Over time, these first people became the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, Stl’pulmsh (Cowlitz), Yakama, Confederated Tribes of the Warm Siletz, Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla. The land north of the Columbia River Gorge is their ancestral home. Wind Mountain carries significance to the Native Americans as a Spirit Quest destination and is home to a sacred archaeological site near the summit.
