The North Star House was built during the age of the California Gold Rush as a home and business accommodation for the second largest producing mine in California. It was designed by Julia Morgan, the first licensed female architect in in the State. Her greatest claim to fame is the Hearst Castle. The House features a catering kitchen, lighted courtyard, open grassy areas, wooded views, a veranda overlooking the sunset and plenty of parking. We're only a couple miles from Downtown Grass Valley's accommodations, shops and nightlife. We allow for lots of flexibility in how you plan your day and you can bring your own vendors and beverages. Julia Morgan was a world renowned female architect who designed more than 700 buildings in California. She was the first woman admitted entrance to Beaux-Arts De Paris, the most prestigious architectural school in the world at the time and in 1904, Morgan became the first woman to obtain her architect license in California. In 1922 she did an extensive remodel of property, while concurrently working on Hearst Castle. This included adding the Conservatory, the present day Sky Suite, the Fireplace mantel in the Ballroom, and more. To preserve her legacy and beautiful additions, the Lewis' honored all of Morgan's original designs since restoring the home from 2016-2019.
