Life can be full of surprises, serendipity, and plenty of unexpected turns. It’s fast, it’s messy, it’s complicated, and it’s beautiful. It sends us signs, and sometimes we might be lucky enough to see them… 10 years ago in Austin for SXSW, sitting down with friends at a spot called Bar Congress, I laid eyes on the most beautiful sight these eyes have ever had the fortune of beholding. Six feet tall, auburn hair, and radiating southern hospitality. I could barely gather a coherent sentence… And soon we left. A year later, back in the Lone Star State I had to find her. Collecting all the courage I could muster, I went back into the bar and…she wasn’t there. But! She’d be back the next day, I was told. The next night, finding myself back on Congress, I saw the kind, familiar face from a year ago. Over my dinner and drink, she and her shift, Caitlin and I kept up as best a conversation could, and I was smitten. We exchanged pleasantries, our Instagram profiles, and proceeded to at least say goodbye this time… Back to the real world…and life, it kept on going. We’d send the occasional like on a photo, a comment when the pics had some cute kids, and that was that. We carried on with our lives, the world kept spinning, and that was that. Until it wasn’t…and almost a decade after meeting she sent a message saying how cute little Nash man was…and a simple “how have you two been doing?” A few texts turned into calls that lasted hours, to trips between Austin & Allentown, to talks about the future. And it was exactly how we all hear it should be—effortless, easy, exciting. In Texas I found someone special. In time, I found my best friend. In taking her hand today, together with our kiddos, I asked her to marry me. And in a simple “yes” we took a step towards bringing our families together. Tonight, thanks to that fast, messy, complicated thing we call life, we’re all under one roof—with our little ones and a little pup. I can’t wait to build our life together—the best days, the boring ones, and all the bits in between. I’m so thankful for Caitlin, our kiddos, Congress Avenue, and a bar in Austin, Texas. Here’s to what life holds next, and to finding every bit of the love in it…
