How We Met

A Two-Year Plan

Mike and I met back in 2017 when I went to visit my older sister, Emily, in North Carolina. Emily and Mike became friends through her now husband, Mike Lowery (yes, it's confusing, they're both named Mike), because they were in the same company in the Marine Corps. For two years, Emily encouraged me to "date Mike Byrne," because we were "so alike," ... and for two years, I said no. My primary concern was that I didn't want to endure a long-distance relationship (the irony, I know). Two years later in 2019, Emily and Mike Lowery got married. Mike and I were both in the wedding party and spent a lot of time together throughout the weekend, talking, laughing, and getting to know one-another better. After that weekend, and after tons of texts and facetime calls, Mike and I had our first actual date on October 10th, 2019, when I flew to Massachusetts for the first time. Eventually, that date turned into a loving, wonderful 3.5-year long-distance relationship. Now, several years, 600 miles, and MANY plane tickets later, Mike and I finally live together in our first house, where we are so excited to marry and make new memories.

The Proposal

8.18.2023

Mike and I woke up one morning and both randomly agreed that we hadn't done anything "fun" together for a while. So, on a whim, we decided to spend the day in Newport, Rhode Island! We got there and spent an hour walking around downtown and getting a bite to eat. Mike mentioned the Cliff Walk nearby, where we would have the chance to walk along the water and see the mansions of the Gilded Age. What started as an innocent walk out of curiosity, turned into an accidental 8-mile walk and a spur-of-the-moment engagement! About halfway through our walk, Mike and I wandered off the walking path to put our feet in the water. As we were standing there, watching the sun reflecting off the water, and seeing the waves crash on the cliffs, Mike turned to me (in an ever-so-romantic fashion) and said, "I really wish I had your ring right now. This would be a really great place to propose...right?" to which I replied, "You know you don't have to have the ring to ask the question...right?" Mike turned to me then and, so eloquently, asked, "Well then are you gonna marry me or what?" Naturally, I thought he was joking, so I laughed and started walking away. Mike stood, confused, until I turned around and (to my utter embarrassment) realized that he was being serious!! So, we laughed, and Mike told me he'd "just keep asking until I said yes," and he did! Once we got back onto the walking trail, Mike made me a ring out of grass, got down on one knee, and popped the question (again)! Truly, it could not have been a more perfect moment, day, or representation of the humor in our relationship that I love so much. We feel so lucky to have had the support of each of you over the last few years, and we cannot wait to celebrate with you all!
