How We Met

October 14, 2013

Gregg and I met at Chuck E. Cheese... Haha! He worked at the store in Vancouver, WA which was the training store for our district. I worked at the store in Eugene, OR - approximately 120 miles away - and was sent to his store to train for my promotion to restaurant manager. We met on October 14, 2013 and if you had asked us any day in those two weeks of training that followed if we liked each other or thought we would ever see each other again the answer would have been no. Things were complicated for both of us coming out of long term relationships and not wanting to jump into anything new but also not wanting to lose out on the spark we both felt. After about 5 months of dating we decided to make it "official" and continued to drive 2 hours each way to see each other every weekend for a year and a half. In June of 2015 I packed his parents truck and my little car to the brim and moved my life 120 miles north to Vancouver, and the rest is history.

The Proposal

June 16, 2019

Gregg and I realized early on that we were meant for each other. In fact, Gregg actually brought up marriage long before I even did. The joke's on me though - I waited about another 6 years for him to pop the question! After being together for such a long time and knowing marriage was on the table, I started to be very suspicious of all circumstances that could lead to a proposal. So, even though I explicitly told Gregg I wanted it to be just the two of us and not associated with any holiday or major life event, he really couldn't follow that if he wanted it to be a surprise. Fast forward to my college graduation in June of 2019. For me, it was a fantastically hectic day. I had to be in downtown Portland around 9:00am for the ceremony, so I was gone all day leaving the perfect opportunity for Gregg to set up my "graduation party" for the ideal proposal. At some point that afternoon during the party, Gregg's mom ushered everyone outside onto their deck so she could give a toast, and a few others could as well. When Gregg started giving his toast he was nervous and a bit shaky. We were mostly surrounded by family and friends that we see often so I was a bit surprised he was so nervous. I assumed it was just an emotional day for him too. My graduation wasn't just a big accomplishment for me - he had also been working full time, and taking care of me and everything else so I could focus on school which is pretty overwhelming. What I did not assume, is that he was feeling overwhelmed because he was going to ask one of the most important questions of both of our lives. Mid-toast his dad reached over to hand him something and next thing I knew Gregg was saying something about "from Miss Portland to Mrs. Wheatcroft" and suddenly down on one knee holding the ring we picked out together. Now I was the one overwhelmed - with shock and excitement! After 6 years of waiting, a pandemic, and having to change our date twice we will be #FinallyTheWheatcrofts!

For all the days along the way
