Ayla Kirby always asked if I would come hangout with her other friends. After saying no about 12 times, I finally said yes . . . and 4 years later, I said yes to Wes. Libby was throwing a girl's night wine Wednesday at her house to plan for her upcoming birthday party. Wes decided to fill in as the token guy. I knocked on the glass door, he was standing right in front of it, and refused to let me in. Ayla came to rescue me, and I decided to chat up the man who refused to open the door for me. Wes has now spent the last four years opening my door and that group of friends became my family.
I had finally finished my law school finals and began shifting my thought process to Wes's upcoming birthday. I was absolutely, positively, 100 percent-ally certain that he would pop the question the following weekend since his birthday party was the next day. In true type A fashion, I scheduled to get my hair cut and nails done in preparation for the following weekend. Ayla came with me to have a girls day since she had just finished her finals too. The hairstylist asked me if I wanted my hair styled, and while I never wanted to do it previously, I said why not. We headed to the nail salon and after waiting 40 minutes to get in, I wanted to leave and just come back during the week. Ayla said no, she REALLY wanted to get her's done so we waited and finally got in. All this time, Ayla would not stop smiling at me and I didn't even notice. After grabbing a bite, because you know, it's girl's day out, we headed back to the house so I could make Wes's birthday cake. All of a sudden, Wes comes in with his brother and sister-in-law. I was told he had a business meeting in town and asked to stay for the party later. I STILL DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING WAS UP. So, I made Wes's cake, even though he kept asking me to do it later in the week, knowing it would delay my arrival to the "birthday party" and leave all those people sitting in the 40 degree weather. Then, Ayla said we should go take holiday pictures. We never did this. And still, I didn't think anything was happening. We went and took pictures at our favorite bar, Hammer and Ale and the notorious I love Memphis sign. After our crazy awesome adventure, Ayla guided me to our friend's house down the street, walked me into the back yard, and Wes welcomed me to "his birthday party." My present to him was saying a resounding yes. The cake was a resounding success by the way.
