We always had an idea of who the other one was, both being from Oudtshoorn. I was in grade 9 and Warren was in Grade 12. We had mutual acquaintances, but no real contact beyond that. We did, however, exchange Mxit details (yes, you read that right). In 2014 I saw a picture of Warren on Facebook and after curiosity got the better of me, I reached out and asked where he was based. Warren was in England at that time and after exchanging BBM Pins, we started talking. That eventually led to many chats over Skype. Warren returned to South Africa in September 2014. I took the train from Tygerberg and he took the train from Elfindale. We met up at Cape Town Station spent the day at Eastern Food Bazaar. A month later, we started dating officially, and as all great love stories go, the rest is history...
We had planned to go on holiday in April, and Jolene had expected the big moment to happen then. But I wanted it to be a complete surprise, so I decided to shake things up a bit. So came Valentine’s Day 2020. We went for dinner in Camps Bay that night. I drove to the restaurant earlier that day to arrange with them. When we got there later that night, I slipped away and gave the ring to the manager. Once there, we couldn’t decide on starters, so we left the matter there. After our first round of drinks, out came the plate with the ring on. Jolene thought it was the starters we couldn’t agree on. I got down on one knee and took the ring from the plate. Surprised beyond measure, Jolene stood up. With tears in her eyes, she said yes. And then we were engaged!
