Terry and Jess have known each other since they were kids thanks to growing up in the age of the internet. They would go months or even years without hearing from each other but always manage to reconnect. After college Jess, having relocated and living on her own, Terry offered to take some time off work and come for a visit. Jess thought that it was pretty reckless to invite someone she'd never met to come to her apartment and stay with her for a week but she did it anyway. By the end of the trip they knew it was something special but Jess, hesitant to get into a long distance relationship said goodbye with ache in her heart. They left a lock on a bridge nearby with the dates of his stay with her and the words "It hurt because it mattered". It was only a few weeks later when Jess and Terry committed to the proposal that if Terry could move to Pennsylvania to live with Jess within 1 year then she could bring herself to do a long distance commitment. A promise he would fulfill.
On a vacation to Tennessee with friends, Terry asked Jess to try to get pictures out on the balcony during the beautiful sunset over the Smokey Mountains that they had a great view of. Outside their friends took a few photos of them. Terry then reached into his pocket and handed Jess a lock, a replica of the lock they had placed on the bridge years ago when both of them thought they were saying goodbye. As she looked confused upon the lock she could see behind it that Terry was on one knee. He said "Jess, Will you marry me?" She said the second felt like minutes as she realized what was happening and she, through tears, said "Absolutely, Yes!"
