Things To Do

Don't miss the Treue Der Union monument while you're in town. It means "Loyalty to the Union" in German, and is the oldest Civil War monument in Texas (dedicated August 10, 1866), this limestone obelisk is inscribed with the names of the thirty-six men captured and killed in the Battle of the Nueces, in Kinney County, on August 10, 1862. The battle and ensuing pursuit were initiated when Confederate forces attacked a group of Hill Country Union sympathizers, mostly German immigrants, who were trying to make their way to Mexico rather than fight against their adopted homeland. The memorial is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is a Texas State Historical Landmark, and a Texas State Archaeological landmark.
