The bright desert sun gleaming off the red sandstone greeting us on our first full day in Sedona, Arizona. We drove to the Bear Mountain trailhead which was a 5-mile out-and-back trail with close to 2,000ft elevation gain. I had hidden the ring in my pocket and was desperately trying to hide the nerves and excitement as we began our early morning trek. The views were spectacular and we had such a good time enjoying nature, conversation, and getting away from the chaos of school and COVID. We had some "hiking friends" we made along the way who trailed a bit behind us. At lunch, I could hardly eat anything due to the 'big question' looking down at me from the peak. Our friends passed us merrily as we rested with the cool breeze bringing relief. Callie took the lead as usual as we headed for the peak. After a few switchbacks and maybe a few breathers, we had finally reached the top and found marvelous views and strong winds. Now was the tricky part, how was I going to get a pic of me proposing? Luckily our hiking friends had reached the top and I snuck off to ask them to take a pic of us. Actually, I told them I was planning to propose and to take a video! They were super excited and more than happy to help. The walk back to Callie was full of nerves, excitement, and love. We took a few "photos" together and then I got down on one knee and told Callie how much I loved her and wanted to be with her all-the-while our friends were filming. She was surprised (mission accomplished there) and said yes with the biggest smile! We couldn't be happier. The hike back felt lighter and filled with smiles and laughter -- that feeling hasn't left.
